Valentines card "Flowers"

Required Material
  • Blank card in dark red, portrait format 10,5cm x 21cm (opened 21cm x 21cm)
  • Water colour paper or drawing cardboard in white or natural colour
  • Pencil Grip 2001
  • Paint brush
  • Graphite paper
  • Eraser
  • Ruler (as possible made of metal)
  • Scissors
  • Glue and some glue strips
  • Ribbon
  • Art GRIP Aquarelle in the following colours:
  • 118 Scarlet Red
  • 121 Pale Geranium Lake
  • 134 Crimson
  • 230 Cold Grey I

Step-By-Step Tutorial

1. Print out the template at 100% printer scale. Lay down the template on the drawing cardboard and fix it with glue strips on one side. Place the graphite paper underneath the template. Trace the lines of the template. The lines should be quite pale, otherwise they will shine through when colouring the card later on. Reduce strong lines with an eraser.

2. Colour the flowers with Pale Geranium Lake and draw a small star-shape in the middle of the flower with Scarlet Red. Through layering the different colours you will achieve vivid colour mixtures. Colour the leaves with Cold Grey I. Hint: Try out the colour mixtures and the colour intensity on an extra sheet before working on the actual painting!

3. Use a wet brush to create water colour effects. Work on one petal at a time in order to prevent the colours from mixing.

4. As long as the colours of the flowers are still moist it is possible to apply more pigment and to intensify the colours. To do so, apply some water colour on an extra sheet of drawing cardboard and dissolve the colour with a paint brush. Dab the colour into the still moist picture. Intensify the center of the flower with Crimson.

5. Cut out the drawing. Cut a ribbon that is slightly wider than the coloured drawing board and glue it to the card. Glue the drawing over that. Then measure and cut the ribbon or cord before glueing it to the center of the drawing.
